Brad Keithley’s Chart of the Week: SB 21 is broken The typical flurry of legislative session op-eds warning against changes to oil taxes began the week before last. True to form, the season kicked off with an op-ed in the Anchorage Daily News (ADN)…

The problem with Alaska's current #OilTax structure is that it's built on components that may make individual sense, but when stacked on top of each other, produce sub-optimal (less than Constitutional) results for the state. #akleg

Listening to some #akleg defending the current #OilTax structure when it clearly needs changing is as frustrating as, in the early 2010s, listening to those who defended ACES when it clearly needed changing. #FixIt buff.ly/q7pbISL

Interesting fact: The #akleg is leaving (much) more money on the table by accepting high-cost, mediocre Permanent Fund Corp performance than they would gain from #OilTax reform.

#AKleg R's are great at talking about "saving the PFD." But when it comes time to do something about it - like fix the broken #OilTax system to restore level revenues - they side with the special interests against #AKfams. buff.ly/ejb6Tlz

Despite increasing production, Alaska's revenue from that production is falling significantly due to some problems with how the #OilTax code operates in the current environment. Rep. Johnson's solution? Don't fix the tax code. The unspoken part? Increase PFD cuts instead. #akleg buff.ly/yUTIqJg

With bipartisan support, Alaska Senate panel again proposes new PFD formula • Alaska Beacon The '75-25' split proposal is worth about $1,420 per PFD recipient this year but faces several budgetary obstacles.

There's a huge difference b/w Sen. Yundt's #OilTax & Sens. Cronk & Kaufman's #PFDcuts. Yundt raises revs by leveling the current tax structure among #OilCos. Cronk/Kaufman raise revs by taking even more from middle & lower-income #AKfams, widening the income gap even further. #akleg

Alaska Legislature faces a $200M-plus deficit as it weighs school funding, dividend Legislators are facing a familiar choice: cut the PFD or abandon a school funding boost.

It's NOT about K-12 v PFD. It's K-12 v revenue. #AKleg PFDcuts are one alt (the "most regressive" that have the "largest adverse impact" on the #AKecon & are "by far the costliest for #AKfams"). Others are sales tax, income tax, #OilTax reform. Why aren't they listed?

Brad Keithley’s chart of the week: Is the State (Governor + Legislature) leaving money on the table? Last month we wrote a column entitled “How much would ‘government take’ from oil need to increase to balance the budget.” In that column we wrote this:… Read More

To the extent Alaska's #OilTax rates are below the revenue-maximizing point required by the Constitution, the state is subsidizing the #OilCos & #NonRez workers they are importing. While the state's budget hole is even deeper, eliminating those subsidies is an important step. #akleg buff.ly/4gkfPwj
