Scribed orienteering map of an area of open dunes and slow sycamore woodland on sandy soils. A lot of green woodland with clearings and most of the dunes are rough open. A big golf course (yellow) lies to the south and the north is bounded by the Firth of Forth.
Gullane Dunes and Archerfield Estate 1979. Much of the area - the wooded bit to the east has been lost to golf and the big southern open area is the famous Muirfield course. Dunes are still used and hosted the Scottish Championships. #OldOrienteeringMap #Orienteering #Map #Interlopers #EastLothian
A rather distinctive orienteering map of a conifer plantation in North Wales. The highest point in the forest is around 500m. The map uses a very bluish colour for the green screen as was popular with the EBOR maps of th time. Lots of rides divide the forest up and there are some areas of moorland. Scale is 1:20000 which was pretty well obsolete by 1981.
Clocaenog, 1981. Even at the time this map felt a bit retro - 1:20000 scale and of an upland Sitka plantation. Does anyone still use them anymore - oh hello ELO.

The scale has been corrected to 1 to 16,667 from 1 to 15,000 (there were worse scale errors on an earlier edition back in 1973 according to the NGOC newsletter Legend)

One to fifteen thousand orienteering map, five colours from a time when that was special (1974 JK) Features old railways (only just lifted) and mining spoil heaps. A lot of green but not too bad for runnability.
Speech House North1978. Usually known as New Beechenhurst this is probably the best known bit of Dean. The map was made for the 74 JK by OK Nuts and regularly updated throughout the 70s.This event was by #NGOC but this is #BOK territory.

5 colour one to fifteen thousand orienteering map. Mix of runnabilities with a very large clearfelled area in the east. The area is in three parts. Parkend Walk, south and Cannop Ponds east both still in use with some of the Nags Hill RSPB reserve in the middle - obviously this bit of the forest has not been used for many decades now. Parkend 1977. Southern Champs originally then 2 day event 1978 which became the Triple Gloucester.5-7 is now a RSPB reserve.The area is still in use, usually as a Parkend or Cannop Ponds map.

One to fifteen thousand orienteering map of a runnable forest on a couple of ridges. There is a lake in the southeast corner. Most of the area is now a holiday camp. Drawn by Roy McIntyre.
Shear Water 1978. An area lost to Senter Porcs, but was a fine mostly pine wood in the north of the massive Selwood Forest.
Event remembered for the airgun sniper by the lake.

1:10000 scribed orienteering map - very clear, of a runnable forest with two steep sided valleys in the middle of the area. There is a remarked course from a relay event. Drawn by Vic Roberts. Typical of the style of mapping further north in Yorkshire at the time.
Strines 1978. A very fine runnable forest used for the #JK relay. Now the western part has been turned into moorland and the area has long since disappeared from fixture lists.
