USRC Thetis 1906 logs are full of surprises.
In August, after reaching Point Barrow, she met the Norwegian sloop Gjøa, led by Roald Amundsen and a crew of six, who had just managed to pass for the first time through the Northwest passage!

I know the sentiment.
For this exact reason I started Journey Plotter back in the day.
While transcribing #WW1 logs for #OldWeather I wanted to see and understand where #RoyalNavy ships had been.

It's always fascinating when logs contain details of scientific relevance.
On 10th July 1906, USRC Thetis perform a reconnaissance of Bogoslof Island(s) after a major geological event. The hand drawn sketch is awesome.
1905-06 logs will appear soon on naval-history.net

USRC Thetis logkeeper struggling with the Russian name of a seaman (should be Constantine Yakovlev - Яковлев in his language). After Jokoflef, Jokofleff and Jkofliff he gives up and write just Constantine 😄
Luckily I could link all these names, sometimes it can be tricky

Just in time for the new year, the edited logs of USRC Thetis 1901-02 have been published: www.naval-history.net/OW-US/Thetis...
Beside De Windt expedition and Mike Healy command, the logs are full, as always, of big and small fascinating details

In order to celebrate my move on Bluesky i'd like to share the current state of our #OldWeather database of obscure placenames, which has reached the quite impressive amount of 36000 (and counting) unique names.
Lists and maps are freely available in the files section of owtools.scienceontheweb.net

JP makes use of data from original log-books that have been transcribed by volunteers on the Old Weather project.
'Old Weather and more'; a short piece I wrote a while ago on the impact #OldWeather has in fields other than climate.

USS Jamestown was stationed at #Sitka, #Alaska, from 1879 to 1881.
They left their mark till this day, though.
