No. 22: “Maiestie.” A street-corner sign for the City of Roses Motel, red paint peeling from the edges of it, white panels stained with old rain and rust, the M and the L missing from Motel, all beneath an old-fashioned streetlamp that appears to be lit despite the afternoon sun. The sign’s thrust up from a wild profusion of a rosebush, canes sprung every which way bent low by the weight of the heavy red blooms. Vacancy, says the sign just above them.
