These invasive plants were first seeded in the late 1800s, and then more rapidly after Hwy 101 was built, to stabilize the shifting sands. They have since threatened the long-term survival of the dunes.

A trail of raccoon tracks across rippled sand. The tracks are in patterns of four: a front foot, another front with the opposite hind landing on top of it, and then a hind foot. This is characteristic of a lope or galloping pattern.
Though I've occasionally seen raccoons do this, I'd never had this gait show up in tracks until I trailed one over an open landscape. Here, the canonical side-by-side of their extreme overstep walk morphs into...a lope! #trackinglife #OregonDunes #wildlifetracking
