Deer rubs and scrapes aren't just scent marking, they're also photoluminescent visual signals.

A trail of raccoon tracks across rippled sand. The tracks are in patterns of four: a front foot, another front with the opposite hind landing on top of it, and then a hind foot. This is characteristic of a lope or galloping pattern.
Though I've occasionally seen raccoons do this, I'd never had this gait show up in tracks until I trailed one over an open landscape. Here, the canonical side-by-side of their extreme overstep walk morphs into...a lope! #trackinglife #OregonDunes #wildlifetracking
A western redcedar tree showing prominent claw marks, 4 in parallel and several inches long.
One of my favorite signs from today, I won’t say where. Do you know who? #trackinglife
Side view of a black bear walking along a gravel roadway, with vegetation in the background.
It's not just humans who use driveways and roads! #Wildlife will often make use of these easy, clear ways to get around. #trailcamtuesday #blackbear #conservation #trackinglife
Off to do some land work and tracking, including camera checks. There’ll be a lot of human activity recorded but even with the construction it’s striking how much wildlife activity we’ve had. #wildneighbors #trackinglife
A lioness reclining on sandy soil, head turned toward the camera.
That look that cats give you hits different when the cat is a lion. #Namibia #etoshanationalpark #trackinglife
Downloading the last few weeks is going to take awhile (and yes there are photos) but here’s what I was doing #trackinglife www.trackingthekalahari.org
SOMEWHERE in the pile of planter pots and unkempt grass in my backyard, there is a junco nest. I couldn't find it, but outraged chirping from both babbies and parents indicate it's there somewhere.
So that part of the yard isn't getting mowed for a bit... #trackinglife #urbanwildlife
Just followed a couple of crows, half a dozen jays, and innumerable juncos having a shitfit to a barred owl in the trees behind my house, that was cool #trackinglife
Totally grossed out a nine year old today by picking apart mountain lion scat to figure out what it had eaten anyway how was your day #trackinglife
