A red headed woodpecker on the side of a pine tree, clinging to the bark. It's head his solid red, with a black back and white chest. This was taken near Center Hill Dam between Cookeville and Nashville, Tennessee.
One of my favorite in-flight captures, this female mallard was coming in for a landing at the Murfree Springs wetlands behind the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Her head is green, her body gray, and her wings have blue and white highlights at the back of the wings. The bokeh is green and yellow behind the duck, blurred due to the motion.
A male mallard swimming, with a drop of water just splashing up from the surface of Murfree Springs wetlands. The head of the duck is an iridescent green, the chest is brown, and the duck's beak is a tan-yellow.
This peacock was photographed near the front door of a chalet we stayed in near the Smoky Mountains National Park in the Cosby, Tennessee area. The peacock's head his deep blue, with green and blue patterns on his massive tail feathers, and the bird has gray and black coloration on its wings. We learned from the chalet rental folks that this bird has been flying from chalet to chalet in those hills for years, mooching from tourists before flying back to the farm when it lives to roost at night. It was quite a surprise for us to find when we were leaving the cabin after our stay.
Today's Bird of the Day theme is "tricolor", any bird with three or more colors.
A red headed woodpecker, a female mallard in flight, a male mallard, and a strutting peacock fit the bill.
