“Leeds Women’s Aid is deeply shocked and saddened by the brutal attack in Headingley on Saturday.

The targeting of innocent young women enjoying a day out on one of the country’s most popular pub crawl routes is truly horrific, and the incident has understandably caused shock and fear across our community.

There has been widespread and damaging social media posts speculating about the suspect, who is currently under investigation by counter-terrorism police. We will be following developments in the case closely.

The rise in violence against women and girls, often fuelled by online extremism, is deeply concerning. We call on social media platforms to take meaningful action to tackle harmful content and work collaboratively to prevent tragedies like this from happening. We also encourage individuals and organisations to call out this behaviour and work together to end violence against women and girls.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during their recovery.”
