A tight little flock of mottled brown ducks is curled up together on the wooden boat landing, each bird tucked into the soft feathers of the next so closely that they almost merge into a single, rounded cushion of plumage, eyes half‑closed in calm rest as if wrapped in a shared blanket of warmth and safety. Pressed shoulder to shoulder, with wings and backs overlapping until no space is left between them, they conserve body heat against the cool air drifting over the water while their heads turn and disappear into their own or a neighbour’s feathers, creating an atmosphere of mutual trust and gentle comfort rather than alertness or flight. Resting on the weathered planks of the dock lifts them just above the waterline and gives them a quiet refuge where they can relax without swimming or foraging, and their tight circular cluster means each duck is partly shielded by the others, forming a small, protective community in which warmth and safety arise from staying close together.
