The most important #dictionary of the English language prior to publication of the #OxfordEnglishDictionary was #SamuelJohnson's dictionary, published on #ThisDayInHistory in 1755. It remains one of the greatest achievements in scholarship by a single author (he wrote it alone).
@mrjamesob.bsky.social saw the fantastic @markthomasinfo.bsky.social this week and was introduced to his campaign to get a new noun introduced into the #OxfordEnglishDictionary that describes the rancid liquid found at the bottom of a bin: - Faridge (sic) 😂
A worthy campaign #Faridge
Logophiles, lexicographers, and philologists rejoice, for on #ThisDayInHistory in 1884 the first fascicle of what became the #OxfordEnglishDictionary was published. The project to build a historical #dictionary of English began in 1858 and the first edition was completed in 1928.

A vintage Sony Walkman advertisement shows two smiling teenagers roller skating side-by-side on a sunny day, dressed in brightly colored athletic shorts and shirts. One of them holds a blue Sony Walkman connected to lightweight headphones, with the cord trailing between them as they skate on a smooth path surrounded by lush green grass. In the lower right corner, a close-up image of the Walkman and its headphones is displayed alongside the Sony logo and the word “WALKMAN” in bold pink letters.
The rest is history. In 10 years, Sony sold 50 million Walkmans. It was frequently seen in 1980s teen films and music videos. The brand name even entered the Oxford English Dictionary.

Good to see Northern England getting more explicit recognition from the OED.
I was also delighted to be reminded of the existence of the word "apeth", which I have not heard in speech for decades, and to learn of its etymology; as a child, I thought it had something to do with apes!

3/3 folks for having a limited vocabulary. This is why the majority of people are disconnected from actual science and facts, and disconnected from politics. Everyone is speaking English but we aren't using the same vocabulary. #OxfordEnglishDictionary #dobetter #wethepeople #oed #dictionary #words
2/3 I get the OED have bills to pay, but limiting access to only those who can afford it is a prime example of what we are protesting against in the USA. Education should be accessible to ALL. Not just those that can afford it. We can't limit words and then mock #OxfordEnglishDictionary #dobetter
1/3 To access the Oxford English Dictionary online, you need to buy a subscription. Without paying about $100/year, you cannot access a word's definition or etymology. It will tells how many definition the word has, give you a snippet of history, and a few pronunciations. #OxfordEnglishDictionary
