The most important #dictionary of the English language prior to publication of the #OxfordEnglishDictionary was #SamuelJohnson's dictionary, published on #ThisDayInHistory in 1755. It remains one of the greatest achievements in scholarship by a single author (he wrote it alone).

The rest is history. In 10 years, Sony sold 50 million Walkmans. It was frequently seen in 1980s teen films and music videos. The brand name even entered the Oxford English Dictionary.

I was also delighted to be reminded of the existence of the word "apeth", which I have not heard in speech for decades, and to learn of its etymology; as a child, I thought it had something to do with apes!
