Shenandoah still has a good deal of trail erosion damage from the heavy rains this summer so every opportunity to get some work in before the ground freezes for winter is appreciated. This week's project was new stone on the North Marshall #AT to repair gullies in the trailbed. #hiking #PATC
Two Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) volunteers work on the finishing touches of a new rock check dam on North Marshall Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park. One volunteer tries to insert a small rock into a crevasse.
The perennial trail maintainers' game of "rock tetris" - 'now where does this one fit?'
Despite the ongoing government shutdown, #PATC volunteers recently got approval to continue working on the #AT in Shenandoah NP (but not side trails). #nationalparks #hiking

An AT thru-hiker making use of the newly restored trail.
Original washed-out condition of the trail before the trail crew got to work, including an +8-inch deep gully carved out of the gravel bed by runoff.
Wet summer on the East Coast caused a lot of erosion on the trail, so this month we worked on rehabbing a washed out section of #AT just off Rt 211 in Shenandoah Natl Park. 11 new checkdams and 3 waterbars should help with the problem. #hiking #patc #nationalparks #snp

Inspecting the other side of the poison ivy mess on Pass Mountain Trail, Shenandoah National Park. The host tree trunk that the poison ivy crown was growing on is caught in a complex 'bind' which imparts significant torsion and stress on the fallen tree. When cutting through the wood, that stress can seize up saw blades or be released suddenly and unexpectedly, both of which present major challenges to safely and successfully removing the trunk from the trail. Ultimately we decided to leave the trunk to another day.
Fortunately being *very* careful with some long-handled loppers we were able to clear the majority out (in very tiny pieces) Unfortunately the underlying host trunk had some gnarly bind, which we ultimately left for another day. (3/3) #hiking #nationalparks #patc #snp
Volunteer trail maintainer for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (very carefully) tackling a giant poison ivy crown that's fallen in the middle of the Pass Mountain Trail, Shenandoah National Park. Yes, there's a trail (it's directly through the center of the picture). All those nice shiny leaves are poison ivy.
...it's a tree-sized poison ivy crown down in the middle of the trail. The trail goes through the center of the picture, and all those shiny leaves and branches? Poison ivy. (2/3) #hiking #nationalparks #patc #snp
This month in trail maintenance adventures - trail maintainer tells us they need help with "the poison ivy tree" on Pass Mtn trail in Shenandoah Natl Park. We (incorrectly) assume 'ok, tree with some poison ivy on it, got it'. Turns out... (1/3) #hiking #nationalparks #patc #snp
A group of Potomac Appalachian Trail Club volunteers using pick mattocks to 'side hill' a section of trail which has been slowly drifting downhill due to uphill erosion and hikers sticking to the downhill side of the trail. 'Sidehilling' involves cutting into the uphill side of the trail to level it out and move the main part of the trail back uphill to it's original track.
This weekend kicks off PATC SNP North District's 'official' trail work season in Shenandoah NP with the first ND monthly worktrip, although we'll have to cancel this month's trip if the government shuts down. Why? 1/3 #nationalparks #patc

Volunteers from multiple Appalachian Trail Clubs, US Forestry Service, and Appalachian Trail Conservancy work on clearing blowdowns on Mount Rogers section of Appalachian Trail. A volunteer sawyer uses a chainsaw to cut off a hanging secondary trunk section while spotters keep watch. The sawyer is leaning over the large central trunk, which makes it difficult to make a cut with the chainsaw. A dusting of snow covers the tree and ground.

Earlier video of the same tree - here a longer two-man crosscut saw is being used by volunteers to cut from above. Most of the crosscut saws used by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club are refurbished pre-WWII tools, including some close to 100 years old. #hiking #AT #patc #nationalparks
The common North American crosscut in its native habitat, the trunk of a fallen blowdown. Shenandoah NP limits the use of gas-powered machinery to preserve the wilderness nature of the backcountry, so more traditional tools are used to clear fallen trees from trails. #hiking #nationalparks #AT #patc
