Inspecting the other side of the poison ivy mess on Pass Mountain Trail, Shenandoah National Park. The host tree trunk that the poison ivy crown was growing on is caught in a complex 'bind' which imparts significant torsion and stress on the fallen tree. When cutting through the wood, that stress can seize up saw blades or be released suddenly and unexpectedly, both of which present major challenges to safely and successfully removing the trunk from the trail. Ultimately we decided to leave the trunk to another day.
Fortunately being *very* careful with some long-handled loppers we were able to clear the majority out (in very tiny pieces) Unfortunately the underlying host trunk had some gnarly bind, which we ultimately left for another day. (3/3) #hiking #nationalparks #patc #snp

A group of Potomac Appalachian Trail Club volunteers using pick mattocks to 'side hill' a section of trail which has been slowly drifting downhill due to uphill erosion and hikers sticking to the downhill side of the trail. 'Sidehilling' involves cutting into the uphill side of the trail to level it out and move the main part of the trail back uphill to it's original track.
