(Chapter) 1. Low Tide Walker Something lurked out in the honey-golden water. From the beach, it might have appeared to be a large clump of seaweed, or a deepening in the sand. There was little evidence it could be anything else, besides an upstream of pearl-sized bubbles and scattered fish-bones riding the surface around the place where it lay. Signs of danger, but small and far off. Even a calm mind might not have taken notice of this, and the woman who ran along the coastline was whipped into the highest alarm. Torn by vines and branches, her blue dress was ripped in several places. Grains of sand stuck *to her sweaty brown hair, and a musket slapped against her back in a steady rhythm, its strap tearing at her sunburnt neck. She had been spat out by the jungle, emerging from a cluster of ferns. The ocean had surprised her. It had robbed her of the option to run straight and mindlessly flee, which was all she’d wanted to do, forever. Now she was headed in a direction she believed to be north, though she wasn’t sure. Tall shapes peeked above the treetops ahead. Rocky land of some sort, which might provide her with a cave or corner in which to hide. If she had a destination, it would be somewhere there. A product of fine cotton, the dress she wore was of a sort that included a long pocket at the side. Inside this pocket, adding some weight by her right knee, were her coin-purse and a larger object brought from home.
