Interestingly the Bobbio Missal *is* ruled, the scribe just doesn't care. Each line of writing does more or less end between two prickings, but it doesn't seem to occur to the scribe to use the ruled lines to establish a baseline.

Last year for Holy Week, I posted the Exorcism and Blessing of the Oil from the Bobbio Missal. See the whole thread for those texts, some truly terrible handwriting, and even worse Latin. 🕯️🧵👇

Last year for Holy Week, I did a deep dive into the Bobbio Missal (neither from Bobbio nor a Missal). See the whole linked thread for size comparison, transcription, and useful links. Diving into this Merovingian liturgical manuscript was mindbending! #medievalsky #paleography #liturgy #PalmSunday

It's less abbreviated than it looks, because the swirly thing that looks like a tilde-esque common mark is actually a superscript U, and A tends to float up like a balloon from the T that follows it. See if you can disentangle the letters. #paleography

Greek minuscule, 15th-century manuscript of Aristotle

Anonymous - Reproduction in: Franz Steffens, Proben aus grieschischen Handschriften und Urkunden, (Trier: Schaar und Dathe, 1912).

The page exemplifies Byzantine minuscule — the cursive, compact Greek script that developed from the 9th century onward and became the dominant manuscript hand of the medieval Greek-speaking world.

The most visually striking element is the large ornamental "A" (Alpha) in the upper left — an elaborate headpiece initial decorated with interlacing scrollwork, floral motifs, and foliate patterns in a style characteristic of late Byzantine manuscript illumination.
