He toys with whether this should be a lesson; a reminder that one must ask to touch in this way, but her exploring fingers are a product of concern and he decides to let it be. Would such a reaction suggest to Mira that he’s uncomfortable with this part of his body? Iris, while recognizing all people eventually feel self-conscious about parts of their body, wishes to raise Mira to love her body in a way the two of them never could. “Do you have questions?” he asks instead and she pulls her hand away. He lifts her up and wanders to the couch, sitting down with her in his lap. “Did it hurt?” “Yes but it does not hurt now.” Mostly - on occasion it is stiff; an annoyance that has him longing for the pre-veil healers who could have masked the scar entirely, leaving his elven form unmarked by war. His three year old need not know that. “Fall down?” Mira gestures to her knees, where thick scabs protect scraped knees from a fall on the sidewalk a few days ago. Iris told him to clean the injuries but not to heal them entirely. “She needs to learn. If you undo every minor hurt she’ll never learn to watch her step,” Iris had said, breaking his heart as she screamed and cried while he cleaned the pebbles off her raw skin. “No.” How to explain war to a child without frightening her? “I got hurt at my old job a very long time ago. A large animal got too close and scratched me.” Admittedly he’s pleased with that age-appropriate variation of the events of the end of the final blight.
