Wood engraving of Great Auk by Thomas Bewick in A History of British Birds, Volume 2, Water Birds, 1804.
It’s #penguinawareness day! 🐧 The penguin is named for its resemblance to the Northern Penguin or Great Auk, extinct by 1844. The last Great Auk in Great Britain (exc. St Kilda) was shot in Papa Westray, Orkney in 1813 as a specimen for a London dealer.
