A big and shiny black Percheron happily grazing at the lovely farm where I boarded him in south central Wisconsin from 2005-2014. Julian was 16.2 hands high (5’5” at his withers—almost too tall to peek over his back while standing by him) but small for an average Percheron so I often referred to him as my Percherette. His ideal weight was about 1400# but he’s light in this photo after his first real winter in 2005.
He was not formally registered at birth due to a minor confirmation issue so was allowed to keep his full beautiful tail, which I spent endless hours detangling. I probably still have some ShowSheen in my shed.
Julian passed peacefully on a retirement farm filled with children and numerous other barnyard “ornaments” about 2 years ago. Not bad for a 1995 draft model! Pretty close to 30 years!!
I was so very fortunate to share in such a large part of his life. The lessons he taught me about horses and, more importantly, myself, remain priceless. 🥰
My handsome former partner, Julian, shiny but working on gaining weight he lost after my divorce moved him from Arizona to Wisconsin winters. Circa Spring 2006.
