A close-up image of a field with a ewe and her newborn lamb, the ewe licking the lamb’s face to clean it after the birth. It’s April and early in the day and still cold, though the sun is out and will warm the lamb on its first day in the world.

This morning’s early morning drive on Pevensey Levels brought mist, frost, birds, and a brand-new life just beginning.

A hiding but wonderfully vocal Cetti’s Warbler from Pevensey Levels this morning. It was a morning for Linnets, Cetti’s, and two newly-arrived Wheatear.

A flat East Sussex landscape under a heavy sky, where strong winds have swept the reeds sideways across a drainage channel, guiding the eye toward the horizon.

Different eye, same landscape.
Today’s photo credit goes to my mum who’s been taking more pictures lately. I really liked her framing of this windblown scene on the Pevensey Levels.

Quick iPad edits from a very chilly local outing at #PevenseyLevels this afternoon. The cold beat me in the end.

There was lichen, looking revived by the damp air, cobwebs heavy and bowed but not breaking, reedheads leaning, limp and saturated, and fungi, deep in the tangle of decaying undergrowth.

Yesterday was rather dank, with a fine drizzle and no wind to move it along. A short walk on Pevensey Levels was almost birdless - between the two of us we saw three birds - so it was a day for looking down and seeing what lay at our feet.

Walking across the beautiful #PevenseyLevels you eventually come to Herstmoncuex Castle, right on the edge of the marsh Here, you come to the second of my #1066CountryWalk #Sculptures - before we get there, though - here's a wood engraving of mine, inspired by the Levels. 'Beyond Earth's bounds'.
