Alright, now time for a story. A couple of summers back, I was really going through it over a loss of people in my life. I would focus on my loneliness none stop, consuming me in depression. That is until I started to look toward to natural world. Slowly it started to give me signs, that until recently, I never accepted as a conversation. The following was my first lessons.
The Sparrow and the Cow Bird. My neighbors have a bird feeder, that I watch each morning as a I drink my coffee, and smoke my bowl. Lately there has been bird following around a sparrow. It squawks and squawks, each time the sparrow rushes to give it food. As soon as the sparrow ends the feeding, the bird squawks more.
I decided to look up what was happening, and learned of the sparrow and cow bird. A completely tragic parasitic relationship in nature. The sparrow builds and nest and lays sparrow eggs. The cow bird, sees this nest and those eggs, and the loving care the sparrow provides, and decides to use that for its gain. It lays an egg in that sparrow nest.
Sparrows can't count, and because what is, is, the bird never questions the arrival of a new egg. It only offers it care.
Once the eggs hatch, the true tragedy occurs. The Cow Bird in its squawking takes all the sparrows attention. First, one baby sparrow dies, then the other. Thrown out of the nest by the cow bird. The cow bird continues to squawk for food, now larger than the sparrow. The sparrow still loving, continues to feed, even as I can see its ribs.
One day the sparrow will stop feeding, stop singing, stop being; that is the day the cow bird will leave, to thrive in life.
I used to question how anything could be that confused about real love and family. Not realizing at the time, I was confused about real love and family myself.
Remember where you give your attention, is where your life force goes. Always question what you are feeding.
