Why Metro Detroiters are still learning centuries old egg decorating technique Hamtramck ― Holding a raw egg in one hand, Nancy Wolny leaned close with a special tool that held beeswax in it and drew ram's horns on it, which represent strength. Participating in a workshop at the Polish Art Center in Hamtramck earlier this week, Wolny then added more symbols to the egg's exterior with wax, including pussy willows, symbolizing spring, and the lines of a ladder, representing growth. Step by step, the egg was transformed with beeswax and dye. It was the Harrison Township resident's first time trying the traditional Polish art of what's called Pisanki egg decorating, but it was a way for her to connect with her Polish heritage. "I like the idea that each one of the symbols means something," Wolny said. "I didn't know that." Creating Pisanki dates back centuries, but at least two local art centers offer workshops to teach the practice to those who want to learn, especially in the weeks leading up to Easter. They hope to preserve a tradition and share it with younger generations. Along with the Polish Art Center in Hamtramck, the Ukrainian American Archives and Museum, also in Hamtramck, offers workshops. Michelle Gerdan, who teaches the workshops at the Polish Art Center, said the only way to keep the tradition alive is to "keep on sharing it." The practice involves "writing" on an egg with melted beeswax and dyeing the egg several times, creating layers of designs. The wax is melted and wiped off at the end. Amid Russia's war in Ukraine, the practice is just one more way of sharing the “wealth of Ukrainian culture," said Donna Voronovich, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ukrainian American Archives and Museum. How to make Pisanki The eggs are called "Pisanki" in Polish or "Pysanky" in Ukrainian. Pisanki comes from the root word "pisać," which means "to write," Gerdan said. Chicken eggs can be used for Pisanki — the yolk is blown out through two small holes at each end before dyeing begins — or duck or goose eggs. Wolny and her sister-in-law, Diane Fisher, were two participants at a workshop earlier this week, and Gerdan was their instructor. They first heated up a tool with a small funnel writing tool, called a pisac or kistka, in the flame of a candle. They then lay the hot funnel in a square of beeswax, melting some of it, and filled the funnel with wax. Then, they used the pisac to draw symbols on their eggs. Gerdan had a guide of symbols to choose from, noting what each symbol stood for. "Each symbol has meaning," Gerdan said. "The flowers are the symbol of life and growth. A deer is a symbol of wealth. Wheat is for good harvest. Chicken feet is for motherhood." The first designs they made would be the color of the egg, as the melted beeswax would preserve the color. They then dyed the egg a different color, such as yellow or green, continuing to add symbols and decorating elements with the beeswax between each color change. The final color of Wolny's egg was purple, while Fisher's was blue. They used the flame of a candle to melt the beeswax off the egg at the end, revealing the colors underneath. Fisher, a resident of Troy, said her egg "turned out better than I thought, actually." Her egg was a different shade of blue than she expected, but she liked it nevertheless. The egg also had yellow, pink and white decorations. "I think these are great Easter colors," she said. Fisher said the most challenging part of the experience was maintaining a "steady hand" while drawing on the egg. Passing on a cultural tradition Gerdan said her mother taught her how to make Pisanki, and she likes sharing the craft with others. "The whole idea" is to pass it down to the next generation, she said. "But it doesn't have to just be children," Gerdan said. "It can be just passing the tradition on as well." The Polish Art Center has offered three or four workshops a week during Lent, she said. They will also have some workshops after Easter. Wolny said she wanted to do the workshop because she is Polish American and remembers seeing Pisanki when she was young, though she never made them herself. She said her ancestors came to the United States in the early 1900s. "It's fun to see your family traditions and the history and, you know, why they do what they do," Wolny said. Connecting with heritage The Ukrainian American Archives and Museum on Joseph Campau Avenue hosted three Pysanka workshops this year, Voronovich said. The museum wanted to let people understand more about Ukrainian heritage, traditions and "the richness of the history of the people," she said. She argued that in the war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to eradicate Ukrainian culture and history. "These traditions, these crafts, our heritage, our music, our art, our language, our literature ― all of that is so, so important to maintain, to celebrate, also to bring to people ― even Ukrainians," Voronovich said. Some Ukrainians of younger generations have been shielded from these traditions over the years because of Russian influence, especially in the eastern parts of Ukraine, she said. Around 30 Ukrainian refugees participated in the Pysanka workshop earlier this month, and others watched, Voronovich said. They were "fascinated" by it, she said. They were aware of Pysanka, but the art hasn't been practiced as much over the last couple of generations. Perhaps their grandmothers or great-grandmothers would have made Pysanka.
