We need #HousingFirst; we need safe consumption sites; we need a #PlaceForPeople who want to sit and enjoy the city; public bathrooms, trees, transit that works. We need a city that works for people so they can feel safe, like they belong and are part of a community.
The only time I’ve not felt safe in the ByWard market has been because of cars… Drivers not paying attention to pedestrians or otherwise distracted, searching for parking.
Make a #BetterByWard a #PlaceForPeople, bring more people 24/7 to have eyes on the street w/better urban design. Save money.
Imagine #OttCity as a better #PlaceForPeople: take away the NCC bike paths and MUPs and what do we have? Some painted lines (most not winter maintained) and a couple of kms of barely protected bike lines DT. Sure, lots of recreational paths in suburbs but how does that help get ppl to work/school?
Good afternoon!
Your call @mayormarksutcliffe.bsky.social! Create a #BetterByWard as a #PlaceForPeople or parking.
Two G7 capital cities; two different visions.
Yup. That should have been the intent of the greenbelt, to constrain sprawl and create a more moderately dense, walkable and transit oriented #PlaceForPeople; but building the 417 and other actions undermined that goal and led to suburb growth and its resulting challenges.
And what city would support; also gives voice to smaller developers/builders and architecture firms so it’s not the same grey/beige/silver boring AF buildings we get over and over. Cost to city is less than $100k per site, a budget rounding error. Result is a #PlaceForPeople
Imagine if we held a Christmas market in… the ByWard Market and made it a vibrant #PlaceForPeople, saw attendance and retail sales bloom and built on this success to create a #BetterByWard
Imagine Wellington west, Bank street or Montreal Road. Imagine #OurBestOttawa, a #PlaceForPeople where parking is off street, creating room for businesses to grow and thrive.
Paris, another G7 capital, invested, led change and created a better #PlaceForPeople thanks to great leadership and listening to talented consultants; #OttCity could choose this, but didn’t. It’s not to late, but we need to galvanize action 1/

Very excited to see this new public realm initiative coming to Centretown, and congratulations to my colleague @arieltroster.com on this accomplishment. Step by step, block by block, we can make Ottawa more a #PlaceForPeople
I love old cars and car festivals. But having this at Lansdowne sends the wrong messaging IMHO; we need to reinforce the idea that this is a #PlaceForPeople not parking.
What would it take to make #OttCity a #PlaceForPeople? A shift in simple things like priorities for cycling/walking (a balance, one could say) and investment in transit; pairing park/public space investment w/washrooms; reinvigorating cultural identity and peacemaking at community scale 2/
Byward should, indeed, be a #PlaceForPeople. Starting with the people who are already there.
Another in the series: The ByWard market today. Imagine a #BetterByWard; see blog and links to videos, pro-bono report and images of what we could be. Reform procurement, get better ideas, create a better #PlaceForPeople bit.ly/3ScHh3G
How many stroads like this are there in #OttCity? Let’s make a #PlaceForPeople @strongtownsottawa.bsky.social @strongtowns.org @seandevine9.bsky.social @jleiper.bsky.social

Same design language; same crappy cheap chain-link fence; same absence of enclosures or shelters for people on platforms. Never forget city wanted no wc on line 1, was forced to have them at 4/13 stations and 1 more was added for line 2. No thought ab #PlaceForPeople
We could absolutely make this a policy change just as we could choose to change road design or otherwise enforce road rules and create a safer healthier, more equitable #PlaceForPeople; we could choose better policy, coherence and cooperation. By don’t. www.urban-progress.com/articles/a-g...
Further to my Quoted post, it’s about changing design culture. We have to want to design a better #PlaceForPeople; we don’t. We care more about process than outcome. Come hear my talk on Thursday.
What if we reformed procurement to eliminate unfair barriers that inhibit a sector contributing 14% of the GDP, built better social infrastructure and better #PlaceForPeople? bit.ly/4hCPdXj

We not only can, but must. Forging community, building friendships, strengthening our economy and creating a better #PlaceForPeople is crucial to survival.
We have the power to make a great #PlaceForPeople; @architectsdca.bsky.social 2019 pro-bono report showed possibilities; we can build on this w/engagement, design-first processes and build a #BetterByWard; here’s a few places to start 1/ bit.ly/3WKNO8F
ON has had ample opp to build homes, address housing inequality and create #PlaceForPeople. Non partisan advice has been ignored and opportunities squandered. It’s long overdue that policy decisions become non-political.
We need a better vision for what #OttCityb could be, as #PlaceForPeople who live here, and for those who visit, in person and through eyes of dignitaries, international media and others. One essay on this call to action via IRPP is here: 3/https://bit.ly/3MIvjLb
Similar to Chicago Arch Centre and @wpgarch.bsky.social last year (slow going and a ton of work) and find great joy in writing local and national media op-eds to push an advocacy message for better #PlaceForPeople; maybe find opps in local election campaigns, policy think tanks, or similar?
We need to think bigger than a applying document. Create a vision for the city we aspire to be; we’ve done it in the past, and while there were pros and cons, we got incredible places as a result. Let’s imagine a better #PlaceForPeople bit.ly/3MIvjLb
