Der Strauch wird bis 2 Meter hoch und ist immergrün. Seine Sprossen und Wurzel können ebenfalls Wasser speichern. So kann die Pflanze lange Dürreperioden überstehen, die in ihrer Heimat, den felsigen Regionen Südafrikas, häufig vorkommen. Wenn der Strauch abgeweidet oder zertreten wird, bilden sich an Sprossen und Blättern, die am Boden liegen, neue Wurzeln. So können daraus wieder neue Pflanzen wachsen. Wurzeln bilden sich teilweise auch schon an den Trieben unbeschädigter Pflanzen. Die staubfeinen Samen des Geldbaums werden vom Wind verbreitet."
