There is a lot of energy in these poems. The poet is at his most powerful when he's using his gift of observation & letting the poetry rise from that. However, the Scots dialect is a challenge & does tend to obscure the meaning. Still, it's an interesting collection. #poetry #poetryreview

THUMP 14: Flowers in the Garden by Tyler Steven Tittle Press: Thistle & Thread Favorite Poem: Poppy Three things I loved: 1. The premise! Flowers in the Garden is a short collection personifying flowers as they are used in or represent healing. Through this collection Tyler asks the reader to listen to nature and the wisdom and solace there. 2. Tyler's examination of the poppy as friend and foe draws attention to the very real pain that The Opioid Crisis has caused as juxtaposed to what the poppy was meant to heal.

THUMP 13: Why I Wear My Past To Work by Chris Campbell Parlyaree Press Favorite Poem: I Am the Man That I Wanted to Be Three things I loved: 1. A lot of what Chris describes are things I thought were part of the female condition, like imposter syndrome and self-doubt, but it turns out men have feelings and insecurities too. (I’m being facetious.)  2. I haven’t read much work through this gaze and I was impressed with Chris’s navigation of daily life and the poetic.

Thump 11: Taylor N. Williams Hypersensitive by Taylor N. Williams Press: self-published I was familiar with Taylor’s work as a digital artist, but she recently (very quietly) released a short book of poems! Favorite poem: Mother Three things I loved: 1. Taylor puts the emotions of being enough while feeling you aren’t enough into words (poets will know what I mean).  2. Taylor writes as both the observer of her life and the protagonist.

Message to a Poet I'll Never Meet Thank you, Carmen

Maybe I’m overthinking this poem. Maybe I’ll never catch every facet no matter how many times I roll all the lines over in my head. I’m just glad I stumbled upon such a jewel in the ink!

Some really interesting ideas on poets reviewing other poets, from Fiona Sampson www.versopolis.com/multimedia/c...
I agree - there are certainly benefits for the poet in sharpening our own craft as we closely analyze the craft of others... #poetryreview

The Book Bag: Down River with Li Po by Karen Pierce Gonzalez Welcome back to The Book Bag. I hope you’ve had a poetic week. This week has been busy. Friends visiting the past weekend got us across North Tyneside and Northumberland. A walk around Rising Sun Country Park, a trip to the coast and a walk over the causeway to St. Mary’s Lighthouse. Some fish and chips too. I also saw Tim Minchin live on Wednesday at Newcastle City Hall who was excellent as always. His live shows always make me laugh, cry and leave with a smile. On top of that, I’ve been reading;

This week we take a tranquil riverboat along 8th Century China and modern day California with Karen Pierce Gonzales who is Down River with Li Po. Published by Black Cat Poetry Press, take a step back from the chaos with me.
