What means „ready to flower“?

The flower is mature enough to flower and release first pollen as soon as the conditions are favorable.
Macro shot: the covering scales are raised, the anthers become visible.

The main pollination period of Spaeth´s #alder has started in the Christmas week as expected.

You can see the pollen bursting out of the catkins. Pollination of this plant is possible if temperatures are above 0 degrees Celsius.

We found thickened spikelets of #switchgrass (#Panicum sp.) in the end of November. Here you can see the purple anthers (=pollen sacks) in the middle after preparation at home.

Obviously, such a late flower did not work.

Status of early bloomers

The catkins of #hazel and #alder are closed. Those most developed are the catkins of Spaeth´s alder, that will flower as first species (first photo).
There is no measurable pollination.

Today a before/after comparison of fountain #grass (#Pennisetum sp.).
On the top flowering in the end of June 2024 and at the bottom now in November.
Some spikelets (=flower) are completely gone.
