PRESENTE! Maine - Our Response to Sen. Collins’ Announcement on ICE Activity in Maine We are not declaring victory — we remain vigilant Like many in our community, we woke up to news Thursday that Sen. Collins announced ICE has “ended its enhanced activities in the State of Maine.” At this time, we have no independent confirmation beyond her word – and our community has learned not to trust politicians’ promises without seeing the reality on the ground. For now, we urge caution, and we remain vigilant. We are not declaring victory. Collins herself stated that “ICE and Customs and Border Patrol will continue their normal operations that have been ongoing here for many years.” For our community, this is not a reassurance – it is an overt threat. ICE and CBP’s so-called “normal operations” have been terrorizing us for years, marked by continued displacement, family separation, and the constant fear that routine daily tasks can result in deportation encounters. What we experienced during the derisively named “Operation Catch of the Day” was just an escalation of the long-standing violence that has always been targeted toward us. Make no mistake, ICE is still in our communities – they did not suddenly arrive one day, and they are not suddenly gone the next. The damage and trauma inflicted on our community is real, ongoing, and inter-generational. During this most recent surge alone, more than 200 people were indiscriminately arrested and torn from their families. Our community members were forced to shelter in place – unable to work, unable to go to school, unable to live. In the coming days, many of our neighbors will face eviction because they were unable to earn income during this siege. Until our community members can leave their homes without fear, nothing has changed. At a minimum, we demand the return of our people back to their loved ones and back to their communities where they belong.
As has happened time and time again, it falls to us – to community organizations and mutual aid networks – to respond and fill the gaps created by political decisions. And we will not be erased. Our people will continue to be terrorized as long as ICE exists. We do not need “scaled-back” enforcement. We do not need a return to “normal operations.” We need ICE out of Maine – permanently. Gone. Abolish ICE and invest those billions in housing, healthcare, education, food, and the resources that actually keep communities safe and healthy and make our state stronger. This is the only path forward. And, yet, even during one of Maine’s darkest moments, we have seen what is possible. Our community showed up for one another when the government attacked. People across the state mobilized, donated, volunteered, shared resources, bore witness to ICE’s cruelty, and protected one another. That power is real and tangible, that solidarity is what kept people alive, and we cannot let it dissipate now. This moment activated something that we must now sustain, build, and nurture. As we take a collective breath, we remain on the ground, responding to urgent needs, meeting basic necessities, filling the gaps this violence created, and building toward long-term community well-being and collective abundance. We organize not just for our survival, but to realize dignity, safety, and the ability to flourish – el Buenvivir. As long as our community continues to go without, we will be there, fighting alongside them. La lucha continua.

Y no seremos borrades. Nuestra gente seguirá siendo aterrorizada mientras ICE exista. No necesitamos una aplicación de la ley “reducida”. No necesitamos un regreso a las “operaciones normales”. Necesitamos que ICE salga de Maine — de manera permanente. Que se vaya. Abolir ICE e invertir esos miles de millones en vivienda, salud, educación, viveres y los recursos que realmente mantienen a las comunidades seguras y saludables y hacen a nuestro estado más fuerte. Este es el único camino hacia adelante. Y, aun así, incluso durante uno de los momentos más oscuros de Maine, hemos visto lo que es posible. Nuestra comunidad se sostuvo unes a otres cuando el gobierno atacó.
