Panel 1: "Beasts of ancient Saurian descent, with teeth and claws... unlike any of the Zenethi peoples... With voracious appetites for our flesh and bone... A sudden crash and the boy tumbled from his straw-strewn bedding to land roughly on the floor. Startled and confused, his head spun around the room in uncertainty. He heard the roar, the voice of his father yet somehow not his father, bellowing and wailing, mixing in the air of night with the shrill-filled screams of his mother. Suddenly, silence descended. For the child, the quiet was even more unsettling. In it’s wake his ears prickled like the hairs on his neck as the slurping sound, wet and sloppy, slipped through the door of his room. The boy slowly picked himself up off the floor and moved to grasp the handle of the door. Just a crack, he opened it. He peeked, a single eye darting desperate to view the expanse of the room beyond but only a sliver to feed his fear was visible. He saw his mother’s feet twitching, her lower legs jerking sporadically, and though the child could not see his father he could hear the rutting of a pig and knew the sound was his. He saw it all, that boy. When Francis flung open the door his legs flexed, ready to run, he froze seeing the face of his mother, twisted in horror yet still alive.
