Renamed this blogpost on the basis of critical comments. My responses also added in a PS at the end of the post.

#PubPeer #retraction
Little blogpost reporting an analysis of recent (2021-2025) retractions of highly-cited papers in relation to #PubPeer comments. deevybee.blogspot.com/2026/02/the-...
#retractions #publishing
Reposting to the #ResearchIntegrity thread to see if anyone would like to take a look at these #PubPeer comments on a nanoparticle review paper
Still not retracted: this article published by an #Elsevier journal has had comments on #PubPeer since October 2021 with non sensical expressions such as "ice water shower" instead of "ice water bath" and other problems

I have posted on #Pubpeer about this paper, see buff.ly/aMKwlmF.

This is so 2025...so someone chatgpt-ed a paper criticising #PubPeer and even did not check citations, the part chatgpt is renowned for hallucinating on, basically making the point they are arguing against...
It's perhaps a little ironic that this recent (or should that be future, as it is being published in 2026?) is getting some remarks on #PubPeer.
The article is available here: buff.ly/5kXkGEh
You can see the PuPeer comments here: buff.ly/09q65qO, but I'll pick up on a few points.

We all know there are several #Pubpeer comments showing fraudulent data and AI-generated papers in #ScientificReports by #SpringerNature, but wow that journal's #review process is screwed up much more than people realize.... Worst experience ever. After one AE refused to make a decision after […]
As someone outside of academia, who still works on #ImageIntegrity, I HATE that #PubPeer requires a .edu email address. What the actual academic fucking gatekeeping?
#RetractionWatch
Papers & #peerreviews with evidence of #ChatGPT writing
Retraction Watch readers have likely heard about papers showing evidence that they were written by ChatGPT. We have reported on the phenomenon.

So, #zotero has a #pubpeer plugin. So I downloaded all ot the university of canterbury's publications from #openalex as a .ris file, and imported them into a new profile. In three clicks. Now I can see who is gossiping about who! Amazing.

In April 2024 I tweeted about two papers that had "Regenerate Response" as part of the article. These had actually been pointed out by @gcabanac who had raised the issue on #PubPeer. These papers were published in 2023, so that are now about two years old.

Are there associated #PubPeer posts (published articles/preprints)?
Is there evidence of GenAl prompts/output phrases?
Are there any fake or improbable references¹? (eg, hallucinated output)
Are there tortured phrases? (eg, "linear regression" becomes "straight relapse")
As far as I understand it though, the primary reason for Science Guardians existence is to provide an alternative to #PubPeer, so that those that have registered on their web site can have their say on articles that have been published.

Would a similar analysis would be feasible in other countries?
I wish #PubPeer would make it possible to search by country of authors to facilitate this. Do other countries have a reporting system that gives data on numbers of allegations & findings from institutional investigations? 6/n
Complementary data was obtained from #PubPeer by analysing comments of articles with a UK author in 2023. Again, numbers of comments suggestive of fabrication/falsification of data were low, but there were some clusters from high-profile research groups. 5/n
Sorry #PubPeer, but Plant Editors got there first. #SciPub #ImageForensics.
While i agree we need to be alert to weaponisation, the threat to put all Sylvain's papers on the #PubPeer site to obtain their retraction is empty. I think we should avoid amplifying this view of PubPeer as some kind of unmoderated site where anyone can make false accusations.
Screenshot of a scientific paper showing corresponding author Hitler Louis as being affiliated with Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (among other institutions)
Very interesting. The Nigerian researcher Hitler Louis, who has dozens of papers flagged on #PubPeer (and a few retractions by now), occasionally used a Saveetha affiliation. We always wondered about his association with that institution.
@elisabethbik.bsky.social Divide and conquer!
We (I dare include the whole #OpenScience community) are in this together. Point to #PubPeer wherever possible. Many are in for this fight - it is not "just" about tinkering with images.
Yet, we learned: Forensics and public shaming are not enough […]

Here's a recent #PubPeer post-review cleanup
pubpeer.com/publications...
Late author response made it impossible to give a rebuttal, but there's always PubPeer
This always happens with open review of journal articles; the authors wait to respond right before the review period ends. Therefore no further rebuttals are allowed. Sneaky smart but science suffers.
This response makes me look like a fool. Yet, there's always #PubPeer (PubPeer.com) to strike back
