A young Puffin (known as a Puffling) standing next to one of his or her parents outside their nesting burrow, both more or less facing us. The Puffling, on the left, has a dark grey beak which is much smaller than that of an adult; the head is black with a band of greyish white on each side starting from a point above the eye, and widening as it goes around the back of the eye (which is black) and across the cheek to the chin; the chest and belly are white; the upper parts black; and the legs and feet grey. The adult's upperparts, including the tail, wings, neck and the top and back of the head are also black; the rest of the head is white but the eye is dark in colour. Each side of the beak, which is short and much taller than it is wide, has at its base a large patch of dark blue enclosed by a thick yellowish border; the rest of the beak is red with a couple of thin yellowish stripes. The chest and belly are white, and the short legs and webbed feet are orange.

A #Puffling! There weren't many young #Puffins to be seen when I visited #Skomer in July, nearly all of them remained in their burrows, safe from marauding Gulls. Occasionally though, one would emerge for a bit of wing-stretching and flapping. #Birds #UKWildlife #NaturePhotography 🌿
