A pair of Gatekeeper butterflies copulating on a laurel hedge. Both butterflies have their wings folded, displaying the undersides. The hindwings are orangey-brown, with a wavy cream band running across the wing towards the outer edge. To either side of the band are some small white spots with dark borders. The forewings - mainly hidden by the hindwings - are orange, with a darker band at the outer edge, and a paler area next to this that contains a large black spot with two small white spots inside it.
