The Axis of Convenience: A New Global Order Emerges This week, we unpack the formation of a new pragmatic alliance in Beijing designed to challenge the West. From Vladimir Putin's direct "red line" threat in Ukraine to a controversial U.S. military strike in the Caribbean, we ask: is the unipolar moment officially over? Episode Highlights - Putin's Ultimatum: Russia’s president issues a direct threat, stating any Western troops in Ukraine, including peacekeepers, will be considered "legitimate targets," as allies debate the systemic financial risks of seizing frozen Russian assets. - Gaza's Stalemate: A deep dive into the stalled hostage negotiations, where Hamas seeks survival and Israel seeks its opponent's elimination, leading to a growing divide between Israel's political leadership and its military command. - The Axis of Convenience: Inside China's massive Victory Day parade, where the presence of Russia, North Korea, India, and Iran signals the rise of a pragmatic bloc built to counter Western influence. - A World Rebalancing: We explore how punitive U.S. tariffs are pushing India toward a tactical alliance with China and analyze the legality of the White House's decision to use lethal military force against a cartel vessel in international waters.

A sketch I made in the Notability app to plan out my Five-Square Shawl. Irregular quadrilaterals are loosely drawn in a five-to-a-vertex tiling with approximate left-right bilateral symmetry. There are three quadrilaterals in the bottom center that all share one vertex, then another layer of 14 quadrilaterals above it, all outlined in black. Outside this central cluster is a final layer of 54 quadrilaterals, outlined in green. Each of the 68 quadrilaterals has a letter A, B, C, D, or E on it, where the A’s are red, the B’s are orange, the C’s are yellow, the D’s are blue, and the E’s are purple. The quadrilaterals are colored so that within each straight strip of squares (as they are in the actual shawl), two colors alternate. At the bottom of the sketch, the number of squares for each color is listed: 15 A, 15 C, 18 B, 10 D, 10 E.

A photograph of the actual Five-Square Shawl, laid out on a wooden deck. Sunburst granny squares are stitched together five to a corner, following the color scheme (though not the actual colors) of the digital sketch. Because of the approximately hyperbolic structure of the resulting fabric, while the bottom upside-down-V shaped edge of the shawl lies relatively flat, the outer edge is severely rippled. The granny squares that are more or less flat are distorted by the tiling into rhombus shapes. Each granny square has a round yellow center, then a round dark and/or intense color layer, then a round coordinating paler color layer, then a square dark grey layer, and finally a pale grey square outer layer. The link on the post shows what the shawl looks like as part of an outfit.

Not as much an artwork as a peek behind the scenes of an artwork. This is the sketch I made to work out how many granny squares I needed for the Five-Square shawl, and a reminder of how unwieldy exponential growth is.
