I finally tried RAKU for the first time! Pulling glowing-hot pottery from the kiln and dropping it into a bin of sawdust felt like controlled chaos. Flames, smoke, crackles… it was like the clay came to life. The results were totally unpredictable, but that’s the magic of it. #RAKU #RAKUpottery

Black Panther Series Vol. 2 #133 This piece is raku fired using a Copper Penny glaze and accented with a gold metallic wax. This piece cold sealed with a clear acrylic gloss spray paint to protect the copper and provide a polished finish. Raku generally refers to a type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western-style raku usually involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking—known as crackling since it is deliberate. The original Japanese style of raku pottery is an outgrowth from Buddhist influences in life, especially in the tea ceremony.
