Really cool to find a snakefly larva yesterday, scuttling across a monument in a local cemetery. Sadly, I’m assuming identification isn’t possible from these terrible photos!

a large, stout female snakefly perches on a long grass stem. it's not a fly, it doesn't really look like a snake.. that's insect names for ya.

the snakefly resembles a brown lace wing, but it has a long thorax and long head. if you tried really hard, you could imagine the head to be snake like. a thick long ovipositor is visible under and beyond the translucent wings.

the same snakefly as seen from above. it is crawling over grass stems and onto an oxalis leaf.

Grateful for my job because I get to take cool photos of bugs all day. Then when the day is over, I can stay longer to take photos of bugs in my own collection! The beautiful diversity of Southern California. #coleoptera #raphidioptera #hymenoptera
