Rauschenberg learned the silkscreen printing technique from Andy Warhol and used this medium frequently, especially during the 1960s. He sourced images from magazines (e.g., Life magazine, National Geographic) and newspapers and sent them out to a silkscreen fabricator to blow the images up to very large sizes. The silkscreen of JFK in “Retrospective I” was taken from a photograph from the second presidential debate, Kennedy vs. Nixon. Other images in this work came from a variety of sources: his own Polaroid photo of a glass of water, a NASA photo of an astronaut with a parachute (in case of need to eject from a Gemini space capsule in an emergency). Rauschenberg’s silkscreen works are a collage of images, greatly enlarged and applied to the canvas with a patchwork of colors and textures. His Pop Art works often incorporated images of John F. Kennedy as a symbol of change that never got the chance to fully happen. “Retroactive I” was created after Kennedy had been assassinated (the image had been sent to the fabricator before that event) and Rauschenberg struggled with the decision to use it or not; by screening the JFK photo in blue, he gives this image an aura of sadness, even as the image exudes strength and command. Of his art in general, he said, “I want my paintings to look like what’s going on outside my window, rather than what’s inside my studio.”
