Book Review – Ravenglass by Carolyn Kirby @novelcarolyn @northodoxpress About the Book In 18th century Whitehaven, Kit Ravenglass grows up in a house of secrets. A shameful mystery surrounds his mother’s death, and his formidable, newly rich father is gambling everything on shipping ventures. Kit takes solace in his beloved sister Fliss, and her sumptuous silks, although he knows better than to reveal his delight in feminine fashion. As the family’s debts mount, Kit’s father turns to the transatlantic slave trade – a ruthless and bloody traffic to which more than a fortune might be lost.

'A historical romp with a wonderfully engaging central character' My review of Ravenglass by Carolyn Kirby @northodoxpress.bsky.social

A steep road ascending a hillside, in hazy weather. There are a couple of vehicles chugging along it, including a yellow AA van.

The 'Three Shires Stone' marking the point where the historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire meet is nearby, behind the camera.

Wrynose Pass, looking east toward Little Langdale. The modern road follows the Roman line between #Ravenglass & #Ambleside for much of the route, with some deviations. It is tough but spectacular going, by wheel, foot or hoof. (Note the AA van - a common sight!) #RomanRoadsFriday

The remains of the Roman bath house at #Ravenglass, #Cumberland. Standing outside the north-east corner of the fort (possibly known as 'Itunocelum'), they among the tallest surviving Roman structures in Britain. Ste for scale. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain

The site of Glannaventa Roman Fort, by the River Esk, #Ravenglass. The river has eroded its western edge & a railway cut through it, but some banks & ditches remain - plus parts of its bathhouse remain, standing just outside the NE corner. #RomanFortThursday #Cumberland #England
