SARCOPHAGUS OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES, C. 450 CE. S. APOLLINARE IN CLASSE, RAVENNA In the right-hand aisle of the basilica of S. Apollinare is this early Christian sarcophagus called "of the twelve apostles" for its front and side reliefs. This is a splendid Ravennate sarcophagus in imported Proconnesian marble, with its typical huge lid, meant not to be buried but displayed. Here the lid is a barrel vault with three radiate crosses. At the centre of the front is a relief of a beardless Christ (with hair like a Severan empress, oddly enough), in a toga and on a throne. His halo bears the Constantinian monogram. In his left hand he holds an open book (a codex, not a scroll) and he is giving the scroll of divine law to Paul (!) with his right hand. Peter, on the other side of Christ, holds a cross and the keys. Two other apostles on either side look towards the centre, gesturing or bearing crowns as gifts. Squat simple pilasters stand at the corners. On the two short sides are three more apostles each, and on the back is a lavish relief showing two peacocks facing a medallion with a cross on it, with grape vines.
Back to #Ravenna for #SarcophagusSaturday, where a huge-lidded #Ravennate #sarcophagus in #SantApollinare in Classe shows us that #Christianity had not wiped out all traces of classical art. Why does #Christ have hair like #JuliaMamaea? We may never know. #AncientBluesky 🏺
