Closer = warmer, more intimate. Further back = less plosives, more space.
Use a pop filter. Clean it often.
Try the BBC trick: tape a pencil across it to break up breath blasts.

Take a cheap, dark ribbon mic — one of those built more for durability than fidelity. Swap the loose, open grill for something tighter and more acoustically focused… suddenly, it's got top-end presence you didn’t know was there.
