A curious church remains in Reculver on the coldest of days but with wonderful light, lending it perfectly for black and white.

Looking down on my friend from the second floor. The first flight was the worst, as they were the original stone steps. We took it in turns to go up higher, as it would've meant carrying our bags again, and we had learnt our lesson by then! 😁

Say "Cheese!" 😁

This shows why I said it was quite the climb getting up to the third floor of the Reculver Tower yesterday. Three flights of a very narrow spiral staircase! πŸ˜… Matthew did give me a smile when I said the word 😁 #ReculverTowers #Reculver #Kent #England

The photo shows a mostly black seabird, perched on top of a red, metal navigational marker in the middle of a body of blue water. The water has small ripples on its surface, and the sun is reflecting off of it, creating a bright, slightly shimmering effect. The channel marker is rusted and weathered, showing its age. The bird is facing to the left and the reflection of the marker is visible in the water directly beneath it. The overall impression is one of a calm, peaceful day at the coast.

I quite like this photo I took at full zoom on my phone yesterday of a cormorant at rest on a navigational marker. It's unedited, but what with the strong wind, and the distance, I wasn't able to get it more clearly in focus πŸ˜” #GreatCormorant | #Sea #Reculver #Kent #England | #birdsoftheworld #birds

What remains of St Mary's Church, Reculver, on a sunny autumn afternoon. The sky is a clear blue, with some fair-weather clouds in the distance. The church dates from the 7th century and is a popular Kent landmark.

Another view of the towers from an adjacent field which was once the site of a Roman fort.

The towers again, but this time from the opposite side from the first photo. The North Sea resembled a mill pond, it was so calm!

A view from inside the seaward tower. Margate, Isle of Thanet (at least, it used to be an island) can just about be made out on the distant horizon. The area between the darker green fields and the horizon used to be a strait, but has long since silted up. Roman galleys and Viking longships used to sail it! πŸ€―πŸ™‚

I spent a great afternoon today with a friend exploring around the Reculver Towers, near Herne Bay, Kent. Somewhere I haven't visited for years. We even got to climb one of the towers! #ReculverTowers #Reculver #HerneBay #Kent #England

Here's a similar view from 2024, via Google Earth (apologies for what it has done to the church), showing that the modern buildings have been cleared and giving a better view of the erosion. #Reculver #RomanFortThursday #Kent

I fancied some sea air and it’s not a bad spot for breakfast.

The view from Reculver towers facing slightly north west. You can see the crescent moon in the top left hand side, the reflection of the moon on the Thames estuary just below. The lights of Essex are visible ok the horizon, while a slight green glow from the aurora can be seen to the right of the picture in the middle of the frame.
