Native women face some of the highest rates of violence in the country, and yet our cases are the least likely to be investigated, reported, or taken seriously. That's not coincidence, it's a system that was never built to protect us. #nativeamerican #women #redshawlday

I missed #RedShawlDay. I will never forget hiking from a cabin in BC past a protest installed at the entrance to a mining site. The red dresses swinging from hangers were gut-wrenching. I spent the rest of a month long trip in learning about missing and murdered indigenous women at various sites.

A wooden sign reading “Denali national park and preserve” and featuring a carved caribou and a white outlined mountain is draped with a piece of red cloth on the right side. The national park service arrowhead hangs from the left side of the sign. Beyond the sign is a snow covered mountain.

#RedShawlDay at Denali (yesterday), honoring the lives of MMIWG2S.

To my knowledge, this is the first or one of very few adornments NPS has made to the entrance sign here.

(Note: I don’t work for the NPS but live in close relationship with many who do, here at Denali and elsewhere.)

Per you folks, today is #RedShawlDay, which brings attention to the acts of violence committed against Indigenous peoples, particularly women and children. During the week of November 19, people are encouraged to wear red as a symbol of the loss of blood through violence.

#RedShawlDay Indigenous women & girls face violence 10 times more than the national average. According to NIJ, 84% of Native women have experienced violence, and they are 10 times more likely to be murdered than other women. The red shawl is a symbol of strength, resilience, and remembrance.
