THE THIRD REICH IN POWER Life in Germany changed quickly starting in 1933. This timeline looks at the course of some of these events. 1933 JANUARY 30 Hitler appointed Reichs Chancellor by President Hindenburg 1933 MARCH 23 Enabling Act passed. This gave Hitler complete control. 1933 MAY 10 Nazis burn books that oppose them, their ideology, or were written by Jews. 1933 JULY 14 The Nazi Party declares itself the only party in Germany. 1933 JULY 14 A law is passed revoking naturalization and cancellation of German citizenship 1933 SEPTEMBER 22 Nazis establish Reich Chamber of Culture. OCTOBER 14 Germany leaves the League of Nations OCTOBER 24 "Habitual and Dangerous Criminals" law is passed. Homeless, beggars, unemployed, and alcoholics are placed in concentration camps. 1934- CENSORSHIP It becomes illegal to criticize the Nazi government. 1934- MEDIA CONTROL Anti-Nazi newspapers are closed or bought out by the Nazis. The news was controlled by the Nazis. MAY 17 Health insurance is denied to Jews. DECEMBER Nazis raid LGBTQ+ bars, arresting around 2,000 men. MAY 21 Defense Law- A person must be of "Ayran Heritage" to serve in the military.
JUNE 14 Jews must register industrial enterprises. JUNE 15 Previously convicted jews were arrested, even for minor infractions like traffic violations and sent to concentration camps. JULY 28 Medical certifications cancelled for all Jewish physicians. NOVEMBER 15 Jewish children expelled from German schools. DECEMBER 3 All Jewish drivers licenses are invalid and confiscated. JANUARY 17 Jews can no longer practice as dentists, veterinarians, or pharmacists. FEBRUARY 21 Jews are required to hand all gold and silver to the Nazis.

In response to Denmark Vesey's planned revolt and subsequent execution, South Carolina enacted stricter slave codes and increased measures to suppress Black resistance. These new laws severely restricted the rights of both enslaved and free Black people, including prohibiting religious gatherings and limiting the ability to assemble. The authorities also heightened surveillance of free Black communities, fearing further uprisings. These repressive measures were intended to maintain control over the Black population and prevent any future attempts at rebellion. However, despite these efforts to tighten control, Vesey's legacy lived on as a powerful symbol of resistance against the institution of slavery and the ongoing struggle for freedom.
