Roman society was patriarchal, yet women still shaped its history.
Cornelia, Hortensia, Agrippina the Elder, & Domitia Lucilla — whose son was Marcus Aurelius — show the influence Roman women could wield in politics, culture, & society.

Meet Helena, mother of Roman emperor, Constantine (AD 249-325). The form of the statue is derived from a 5th C BC Greek work. The statue was once at the Vatican. Pope Pius V gifted it in 1566.

I love how popes owned items like this.

In Ancient #Rome #girls faced many limits — little access to education, early marriage, no political voice. Yet some women owned property, led estates, & held power. The #Vestal Virgins, held unique status & privileges, though bound by strict vows.

For #NationalWomenHealthAndFitnessDay (last Wed of Sept) we share the famous “bikini girls” #mosaic from Sicily (4th c. AD). These weren’t swimsuits but athletic gear — the women are shown competing in sports, with the victor crowned in triumph with palm of victory and wreath!🌿✨

🏛️ This month we’re reading A Rome of One’s Own (A History of the Roman Empire in 21 Women) by Emma Southon. So far I’m happy to go out on a limb: this book is a delight! A smart, funny read.

⚾ To kick off, let me lob you a soft ball question.

Domitia Lucilla was the #mother of #MarcusAurelius. From her mother she inherited a great fortune & a tile & brick factory that provided bricks for iconic #Roman monuments such as the Colosseum. Widowed when Marcus was 3, It is likely that she influenced his interest in #stoicism.

Happy birthday Livia!

Thought her birthday would make a good first post☺️

She’s a fascinating woman, although I’m not always sure I like her personally, she knew how to get what she wanted
