Hey RomanceCon/ Enchanticon -
STOP using the Queer community as a shield against the JKR support.
'I have an LGBTQ friend!!!!! They LOVE talking about HP WHAT ABOUT THEM????'
Yikes

Today in romance con fuckery, they’re circling back to indie authors they originally rejected from the con and now asking them to appear with a free table. Seriously. #romancecon #mischiefmanagement
You missed me complaining about #RomanceCon? Here I go again.
80% of Romance Con authors really said, “I can unintentionally and indirectly support an evil billionaire or I can deliberately and directly fuck over my working class fans” and picked the second option.
Decided tonight I’ll never do any mischief management event. If you attend/work at #BroadwayCon and don’t know what fuckery their management company has been up to lately with #RomanceCon — do some digging.
Trans and nonbinary lives matter more than Harry Potter, romance novels and Broadway fandom
Authors scheduled to attend #Enchanticon haven’t received any communication from Mischief Management. I doubt they will based on their comment that they Sci Fi/fantasy fans aren’t as concerned with things like *checks notes* trans rights so they were surprised by the #RomanceCon controversy.
There’s allegedly still 2,100 attendees for #RomanceCon and conflicting reports whether authors who backed out of the event are going to return or refunds for ticket holders who aren’t going.
Meanwhile Mischief Management just announced their partnering with Mattel to host #BarbieDreamFest.
Update on #RomanceCon, Enchanticon, Mischief Management, and much more.
While Mischief Management is no longer running #RomanceCon, there’s been no clarification about whether the company still owns and profits from the event, despite many authors and attendees asking about it.
It is time for my daily rant.
I, a non-binary queer with #RomanceCon tickets, do not feel loved and supported by the implosion of the con.
1/5
You achieved actual change. Celebrate that. Return to #RomanceCon. You can’t demand change, achieve it, and then turn your back after all that work. You removed the cancer from the event, now come back and heal it.
Okay, I have something else to say about #RomanceCon actually. If the authors, who have all dropped out, and the fans, who are now demanding refunds, had put half as much of that energy toward HBO, WB, or Universal, you could’ve made actual impact where it matters most - R*wling’s pocket.
To start: I hate JK Rowling and think she’s trash.
However today’s mood is super angry at #RomanceCon authors for taking such a hardline stance in what is ultimately a complex situation and only punishing their fans while having no actual real impact on the person causing harm. (Joanne, that bitch)
Okay, at this point I am PISSED that the authors from #RomanceCon are still dropping like flies. You guys got your demands! They broke with the Harry Potter people! They’re going in a new direction! Why the actual fuck are you still canceling!?
Vomance Con + romance_con 3h Readers, we have heard you. As a result, Mischief Management will no longer be associated with Romance Con. I (Melody, the indie bookseller) with the help of a new management company, am working to bring back authors and make this event as welcoming as it should be. Please give me a few days to update as we take on this huge new undertaking.
Domance Con September 5-6, 2025 The Baird Center Milwaukee, Wisconsin @ Join the Facebook Group Join our Book Club Romance Con is produced by All the Hats creative romance-con.com
3hrs ago the official Threads account got #RomanceCon posted that it will no longer be associated with Mischief Management.
All Hats Creative is not listed as the production company on the RomanceCon website. www.allthehats.com
To all the #RomanceCon authors who pulled out - this was your goal, right? Change happened so you’re all coming back, right? You were successful. (Congrats on that, BTW.) I really want to have a good time there myself and not waste all the money and time. Signed, a queer romance reader
As a trans person, it's heartening to see authors and attendees say no to transphobia at #RomanceCon.
Turns out people care about trans rights and don't want transphobia tainting their hobbies, jobs, and experiences.
#RomanceCon update.
157 authors have withdrawn, which is well over half of the original roster of authors. There are discussions among ticket holders, who no longer wish to attend,of collective action to demand refunds.
I’m also seeing claims that 20% of the Echanticon authors have dropped out.
This article by @ceilidhann.bsky.social does a great job of breaking down the situation with authors dropping out of #RomanceCon.
I want to expand on someone points it brought up about the perils of monetizing fanfiction.
Commodifying fandom, via these kinds of conventions is part of the problem.
Quick update.
Over 120 authors have dropped out of #RomanceCon. More authors are dropping out of Enchanticon. RomanceCon sent another email doubling down.
As attendees are now joining authors in decided to not attend, allegedly the official RC page is hiding comments asking about ticket refunds.
I applaud her and this well written rationale 👏 👏 👏 👏
and I applaud her some more 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏

There’s a Google doc of the authors who are no longer attending #RomanceCon. #Romancelandia

I’m going to stop posting updates on authors dropping out of #RomanceCon. They’re popping up to fast for me to keep up. The snowball has turned into an avalanche.
If you have a Threads account and want to track it, most announcements are popping up here: www.threads.com/search?q=rom...
Screenshot of MacArthur’s threads post. “elizamacarthurwrites 32m My response to the Romance Con team. I'll still be in Milwaukee that weekend as I already booked travel and have family there. Maybe I'll see some of you in the wild. If not, may we meet again somewhere else soon. I wish you well. I wish you safe. I wish you loved. Onward.”
Part 1 of the letter. “Dear Romance Con leam, I had an incredible time at Romance Con in 2024. It was a truly magical weekend and I was excited to do it all again this year. To be honest with you, I'm surprised by the events of the past few days. I have had many conversations with people promoting this event by telling them how inclusive and accessible it was, how I was asked what accommodations my autistic assistant may need, how friendly and helpful all of the staff and volunteers were. And you were. Last year was incredible. But there are certain facts that we must acknowledge. The first of which is that we can do so much good and do so many things correctly, but all those good deeds do not absolve us from the harm that we cause. The second fact is that any harm is too much harm. We must be accountable to and for that.”
Part 2 of the letter. “This is the source of my disappointment. Because while I do believe that you care about creating a safe and inclusive space for your LGBTQ+ readers and authors, Mischief Management's actions and tone have indicated that the organization cares about creating a safe and inclusive space for discussions about Harry Potter just a little bit more. I understand that you are continuing with programming associated with JKR's intellectual property because, as you said, "The majority of the programs being referred to online were submitted and are being run by queer and trans people themselves." This is where I have to put on my social worker hat and remind you that people are not monoliths. One or a few members of a community cannot speak on behalf of the entire community. Furthermore, when we consider the safety of marginalized peoples, it is essential that we pay special attention and give extra weight to the voices of those who are claiming harm. Because, as I said, any harm is too much harm. Especially when it is in our power to prevent it.”
Part 3 of the letter. “I am of the opinion that it is well within your power to prevent it. In your follow up email, you said, "There is no harm committed when privately enjoying a story that has been foundational." But privately enjoying a story is not the issue at hand. We are talking about a public convention with panels and events that are entirely centered around that story. It is possible to create safe spaces for people to discuss those fandoms without platforming them with themed panels. At the risk of sounding like my mother, l'm not mad, l'm disappointed. But as I type that, I realize that that isn't true. I am mad. I am mad that, once again, the continued love of the fictional creation of a monster is being given more consideration than the feelings of actual, real life people who are harmed by said monster. I'm mad that instead of offering a sincere apology for harm caused, this organization issued a statement that was the equivalent of "I'm sorry your feelings were hurt." And I'm mad that I can no longer participate in an event that I have been looking forward to since being accepted to return as a signing author.”
Author Eliza MacArthur is withdrawing from #RomanceCon and included a scathing email addressed to the convention and management team.

Instead of hearing more words from a voice that doesn't matter in this conversation (mine) please go check out this list of trans authors you can support. • katee_robert 9h Oh hey, were you furious about the HP fanfics? Did you spent a lot of time and outrage arguing with strangers on the internet about them...”
Screenshot of Ankenman’s threads post. “mariahankenman 1h I have pulled out of Romance Con. I am so sorry to not see the readers attending but as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community I support ALL of us. I've listened to the Trans community, their voices are the ones that matter in this. If my Trans readers and fellow authors do not feel heard or safe attending, then I cannot in good conscience attend. Support Trans authors today and every day.”
Authors Lo Everett and Mariah Ankenman have also dropped out of #RomanceCon.
Screenshot of the Threads post. “milestogobefor eiread 1h Follow I was told by someone that they wished there was a comprehensive list of authors who are no longer attending RomCon, so they know who to support when buying books. I said, y'know what? I'll make one. I asked @beffynicolereads who has been one of the proactive voices in this, if they had a list so I could compare to what I had, and add from theirs to mine. I had no clue there was a list on Romcon's site, but it's not completely updated, so here's all we've compiled Allison Carr Waechter Hazel James Amanda Chaperon Hailey Dickert Anna E. Collins Holly June Smith Arden Coutts Jackie Lau Ashley Herring Blake Jean Meltzer Bianca Miller Jenna Miller B.K. Borison Jenny Holiday Brittany Arreguin Jessica James Charlie Novak Jessica S. Screenshot of Jess L. M. Anderson’s post on Threads. “stressinabox • 2h I'm withdrawing from EnchantiCon 2025. Their recent statement showed me that the event is not truly listening to the broader trans and nonbinary community. Instead, they are centering nostalgic content that continues to cause harm. I simply cannot support spaces that do not prioritize the safety and dignity of our entire queer and trans family. To my Midwest readers, I'm so grateful for your support, and I promise I will find another way to see you in St. Louis soon.”
Screenshot of Don Martin’s threads post. “bydonmartin 1h I have decided to cancel my attendance at Enchanticon. I'm sorry first and foremost to the trans community for whom this entire situation has been painful, leading to harassment and blame for simply wanting to be heard, seen, and valued. I am in discussions for alternative events during that time period. For any readers who were hoping to see me at the event, I do hope to still see you at one of my other appearances.”
Now authors are dropping out of Enchanticon, a fantasy themed convention run by the same management company as #RomanceCon.
Author Jess L. M. Anderson and Don Martin have both posted that they are no longer attending Enchanticon. #Romancelandia #BookSky

Because they were SO inclusive last year, I had hopes they could make this right somehow, but I fear they will be unable to do enough to make this a safe space for everyone, and I cannot support that. • alliesambertswrites AFTER CAREFUL CONSIDERATION, I WILL NO LONGER BE ATTENDING ROMANCE CON THIS YEAR. allie買 samberts lave + literature”
