This portrait of muted colors by Romanian aritst Ștefan Dimitrescu of a peasant from Vlaici, Olt depicts the upper half of a light-to-medium skinned woman wearing a dark head covering over her shoulder-length sandy-blonde hair while looking downward to her left with a thoughtful expression. She wears a cream-colored blouse with intricate embroidery along the shoulders and cuffs of the sleeves. At her waist, we see a dark skirt or wrap with a ribboned-pattern of blue and yellow around her midsection. Dimitrescu uses visible brushstrokes, creating texture and dimension, while the golden colors provide a sense of warmth and mood, rather than sharp, distinct outlines. His attention to detail is balanced with a focus on capturing emotion and atmosphere rather than precision so that we feel we've captured a moment in time. Born in 1886, Dimitrescu was a painter, draftsman, and even a renowned cellist. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Iași and at the Conservatory of Iași before continuing his artistic pursuits in Paris, France. In 1918, he was one of the founders of the Romanian Art association. A few years later, together with Nicolae Tonitza , Francisc Șirato and Oscar Han , he co-founded, in 1926 , the prestigious artistic Romanian association Grupul celor patru (Group of Four). His artwork consists mainly of compositions, portraits and landscapes which convey sincere emotion, especially from villages of Romania and Romanian mining workers, including elements of criticism of the society of his time.
