The evil eye is a term for the belief that the gaze of a person with magical powers can cause another person to suffer misfortune, die, or damage their property. This popular belief in a form of harmful magic was known in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt; it is widespread in the Orient, in Western countries, from Africa to India to China, and among the North American Indians and in South America. Even today, there is a widespread belief that a magic emanates from the eye, affecting another eye and possessing such power that the person experiencing it cannot escape it. It is primarily blamed for the onset of symptoms of illness. In India, the evil eye is called dishti or najar. The swastika is a widely used symbol as a defensive spell. In the search for the seemingly mysterious causes of the origin, meaning, and cross-cultural perpetuation of the evil eye phenomenon and its individual and collective impact, brain research in recent years has been able to contribute to our understanding. Socio-psychological analysis alone and the endless collections of examples have not fully clarified the conditions for belief in the evil eye.

a set of text which is this: What is a Roman mosaic without it being 'Roman' 1. Is made with tesserae that are all the same average size 2. A specific andamento is used (classical andamento) 3. This andamento is easy to learn and its implementation can be consistently maintained (the six rules) 4. This andamento ensures that no one part of the mosaic has any discordance that would draw in the viewer's eye to the detriment of seeing the mosaic as a whole.
In my opinion, if we were to strip away the usual associations with those mosaics and got down to the way in which they were made then this would be it. This is to do with the making of the mosaic. #romanmosaic #romanmosaics #andamento
