and is by a different artist. My parents, from just down the other end of the Roman Road in Bethnal Green, rarely spoke of Bow, and sometimes I can understand why.

A view of the high street in Sittingbourne taken from the middle of the road on market day. The sky is cloudy grey.
Starting my zoom down the old Watling Street 🙂
Zooming further down..
At full zoom. Pretty impressive, eh?! 😎😁
I accompanied a friend to the market in Sittingbourne this lunchtime, and whilst standing in the high street (it's closed to traffic on market days) thought to try out the zoom capabilities of my phone. It's part of the old Roman 'Watling Street', so is nice and straight 🙂 #RomanRoad #Kent #England
Went to another walk this morning which saw us return to Thorncombe Woods on a pretty glorious day.

Day 6 of Bootcamp saw me outside walking in the footsteps of my protagonist who was here c AD 97-103.
#Stanegate #RomanRoad predates the construction of #HadriansWall. The road was built in the late 1st C AD & was used by & to supply Roman troops.

My favourite time of year is #harvest season.
As well as the tractor 🚜, I captured that glorious #RomanRoad, Dere Street. It runs north from York (Eboracum), traverses Hadrian’s Wall into Scotland. Parts of its route are followed by the modern A68.
I wasn’t driving. 😁

Cambridgeshire #Landscape under a grey cloudy sky this afternoon although it was warm with breaks of sunshine.
The hedge and three trees mark the route of the Street Way mapped as (but likely not) a #RomanRoad east of #Cambridge.
I went for a walk from Holystone and eventually found the small section of Roman road uncovered by archeological excavations. It's at 55.309691,-2.102539 if anyone is interested. I went here a couple of months ago with a u3a natural history group but […]

#OnThisDay - 25 May 1842, while digging to lay new drains, workmen discovered #Roman foundations "of the same character as the town wall" opposite the gates of #StPetersChurch. They were found to run 10ft up the hill and ended at a 10ft wide #RomanRoad that crossed the hill.
A long, straight road, flanked by trees.

The same fort viewed from above. Note the shapes inside, & just outside the west gate - evidence of internal buildings & vicus, Hmm, what lies beneath the farm? The A6 is #RomanRoad Margary 7e, Brougham to Carlisle. #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain
Purveyors of memes about how well Roman roads were maintained vis-à-vis their modern equivalents, might take a moment to ponder the Via di Stabiae in Pompeii. Wonderfully worn by ages of traffic, these are potholes of an ancient type.

I took a slight detour to see Barry at The Young Prince. He was in good form, such a shame it was quiet.

First one in the door at The Albert in Bow. A nice 80’s soundtrack playing in the background and a pint for less than a fiver.

Beech avenue in spring before the leaves have appeared
This is my favourite part of Grovely Wood - 2 miles of beech avenue escorting a former Roman road
It completely captivated me - an inexplicable sense of the old trees acting as sentinels, waiting, watching and bearing witness

Across six lanes of a major road - empty of cars - a car sales lot and modern style warehouse retail buildings. The sky is blue, some small clouds. Three blue flags blow in the breeze.
It's often hard to be inspired by the Great Cambridge Road A10, but I do like this photo.
This section (nr Lincoln road, Enfield) is - I think - on the route of Roman Ermine Street (linking Bulls Cross and Tottenham High Rd).

Why were Roman roads so straight? Roman roads were so straight because they were built to move soldiers from point A to point B as quickly and efficiently as possible. #road #romanempire #Romanroad #Rome
