FYI, DOC has proactively closed the Tongariro Alpine Crossing today and tomorrow.
The Bruce Road to Whakapapa Ski Field and the Sky Waka gondola has also been closed.
Irony in this is the gondola is rated to winds up to 120kmh but the road to it considerably less so...

The real lesson from these fires is that Waka Kotahi and KiwiRail need to be held accountable for respective road and rail reserves bounding the conservation estate.

It's amazing that no pedestrians have been skittled let alone killed along Mangatepopo Rd -the entrance to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - on dry dusty days where visibility is down to metres, and with high vehicle traffic numbers...

The scene is the unoriginally-named Old Swimming Pool in Owhango.
You can see the dam where they close off the stream to build up water in the pool.
Dates back to pre-WW2 when it was one of the few pools between Taumarunui and Taihape.
Still gets dammed every summer...
