Court hears election petition challenge against result of
Runcorn and Helsby byelection won by Reform UK by six votes
The candidate who came last in the Runcorn and Helsby byelection has
launched a legal challenge against the result on the basis there was “fraud” at
the count, PA Media reports. PA says:

44 English Constitution party candidate Graham Moore received 50 votes, or a
0.15% share of the vote, in the May election, which saw Reform UK candidate
Sarah Pochin claim the seat with 12,645 votes, just six more than the Labour
candidate.

Giving evidence in the trial of his election petition challenge at Chester crown
court on Monday, Moore spoke about the “statistical impossibility” of receiving
50 votes, which he said was the exact number he received when standing in the
Tooting byelection in 2016.

He told the trial, sitting before high court judges Mr Justice Spencer and Mr
Justice Bryan: “I need the court to focus on process, because process is key.”

‘Moore, who represented himself in the hearing, added: “It’s not the first time
it’s happened but, most importantly, when I’ve seen it happen at other counts
no one has ever pushed it forward to an election hearing and explained the
method and operation of fraud to two high court judges.”

He said he and his count agents had seen an estimated 116 ballots with votes
cast for his party on.

He told the court: “I'm not suggesting that I have won this election. I have never
said that. We’re not really interested in whether it would be Labour or
Conservative or even Reform.”

‘Moore said he did not know whether the loss of votes which he said he saw was
down to error or fraud.

The petition has been made against two respondents, Pochin, who was legally
represented but not present in court, and returning officer Stephen Young.

The trial is listed for three days.

Starmer defends budget that cut winter fuel payments as
Labour campaigners blame it for government's unpopularity

In an interview with Sky News, Keir Starmer defended the government’s
decision to stop winter fuel payments for most pensioners in last year’s
budget. This has been cited by many Labour campaigners - and by the
Labour mayor for Doncaster, Ros Jones (see 10.54am) as a major reason for
the government's unpopularity.

Asked about the cut, Starmer said:

44 The reason that we took the tough but right decisions in the budget was
because we inherited a broken economy.

Maybe other prime ministers would have walked past that, pretended it wasn’t
there... I took the choice to make sure our economy was stable.

Yes they were tough decisions, they were the right decisions. Because of those
decisions we are now seeing waiting lists coming down, something people
desperately want.

Because of that pensioners are now £470 up as of last month, these are really
important changes.

Starmer says he must respond to byelection defeat by going
"further and faster on the change’
Keir Starmer has said that he will respond to the election results by going
“further and faster on the change”.
According to PA Media, asked about the Runcorn and Helsby byelection
result, Starmer said it was “disappointing”
Speaking to reporters, he said:
44 What I want to say is, my response is we get it.
We were elected in last year to bring about change.
He said that his party has “started that work” with changes such as
reductions in NHS waiting lists, and he added:
44 I am determined that we will go further and faster on the change that people
want to see.

One Green party campaigner who knocked on doors in Runcorn and for
council elections in Lancashire said they picked up unprecedented levels of
dislike for Labour - and particularly for Starmer.

“In Runcorn, the Labour message was, ‘Vote Labour or get Nigel Farage’, and
quite a lot of people seemed to go, ‘OK, I'll take Farage’. I've been doing this
for a decade and I've never seen this level of dislike for Labour, particularly
from people who were willing to give them a chance last year and feel they
were given false hope,” the activist said.

“One man chased me down a path yelling, ‘Are you Labour?” When I told him
Iwas a Green he calmed down.”

A win by six might be a cracking result in the football (come on, @wokingfc.bsky.social!), but in a parliamentary by-election, a win by six can easily be overturned. Come on, #RuncornAndHelsby. We can convince six people to think with their heads and not their hearts in 2029.

Elsewhere the mayoralities have similarly bad results to Runcorn but as they're mostly nominally Labour holds they'll be treated differently.

Blimey, The Closest Byelection Ever! Six Votes in #RuncornAndHelsby
Real shame those conmen #ReformUK should happen to win that, in-effect, coin toss, but Labour & Farage being neck-&-neck, a margin ahead of the Tories, Lib Dems & Greens, seems about the right State Of The Nation

Apparently, the way to send a message to Labour to stop acting like a Reform-lite party is to elect the Reform Party.

I'll work that out later.

The #runcornandhelsby by-election is a election that. #Labour didn't need to have & could've easily been avoided. However, what's #KeirStarmer plan besides claiming he doesn't really have to do anything that looks like a plan or strategy for the future.
