Don Quijote y Sancho Panza Francia 1868 Honoré Daumier Francia, 1808–1879 Neue Pinakothek, Munich (Alemania) 📍Digo —respondió Sancho— que confieso que no es deshonra llamar hijo de puta a nadie, cuando cae debajo del entendimiento de alabarle. (Segunda parte del ingenioso caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha) Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra En este perfecto castellano se expresaba Cervantes en una de las obras más importantes de la literatura universal (la más importante para muchos, no voy a ser yo quien se oponga). Desde luego Daumier era de los que opinaban eso, y para un francés tan moderadamente chovinista como él no debía ser fácil reconocer semejante opinión y darle el mérito a un sucio español. Así de bueno debe ser El Quijote. Como sabemos, Daumier se sentía muy identificado con la figura de Don Quijote: un tío medio pirata, un idealista que defendía a los oprimidos, un caballero luchando a contracorriente contra molinos de viento. Pero en vez de lanza en astillero y adarga antigua Daumier peleaba con el arte, metiendo caña a políticos y jueces corruptos de su época y denunciando injusticias. Llamando hijo de puta a quien hubiera que llamarlo, y eso inclusión al rey Luis Felipe, por lo que el artista incluso fue a parar unos meses a prisión. Daumier representó al Caballero de la triste figura en no pocas ocasiones, a veces como exquisitos bocetos, como es este caso. Es una pintura espontánea y directa, con apenas cuatro manchas de color, básica y fresca como una buena canción punk. Una obra muy pequeña donde vemos a Don Quijote a lomos de Rocinante delgadísimos y esbeltos hasta la deformidad caricaturesca (tanto Cervantes como Daumier eran excelentes caricaturistas). Al fondo difuminado el fiel Sancho Panza (o es un árbol en medio del desierto?)
