Sunday Paper – Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes Starting January 1, 2025, California has tightened e-bike rules, banning throttles on Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes, keeping them only for Class 2 models. Honestly, I get it. E-bikes can hit some pretty high speeds, and when you factor in their weight compared to regular bikes, the risks to pedestrians become real. My Lectric XPremium, for example, can hit 45 km/h (28 mph) in Class 3 mode. But personally, I think anything over 18 mph is too much for e-bikes, especially on sidewalks or trails. That’s why I fully support California’s move to rein in throttle use. I even disabled the throttle on my e-bike a while back and stick to safer modes. It just feels like the responsible thing to do.
