Today is the last day of #SLSA2025 ! It has been absolutely delightful to welcome 200 scholars from around the world to Oregon State University for a scintillating set of conversations.
There are a lot of talks at #SLSA25 #SLSA2025 on divination, magic, ritual, the occult, etc. It's very striking. I don't know much about this turn, but my immediate response is to see it as a symptom of current struggles over science and epistemology.
#SLSA2025 Games considered to be rational, like chess. Games played by dice, seen to be about hazard. Games of prudence - board games like backgammon. Even Aquinas saw the importance of games and management.
#SLSA2025 Medieval people were interested in approaching risk in literary/formal ways. The concept of risk can be distinguished from mathematical ways of knowing risk.
#SLSA2025 Medieval risk. Risk before statistics and risk management.
#SLSA2025 How do you apply for grants when the landscape of grant-applications is increasingly risky.
#SLSA2025 How do we supplement traditional studies of risk? i.e. risk management?
#SLSA2025 Group of scholars from across OSU, thinking about communication studies, rhetoric, literary studies and others in thinking about risk.
Gonna type up a few notes from #SLSA2025 panel on Interdisciplinary Risk.
