CONTENT WARNING: This is horrific, but it is entirely predictable when there is zero vision from our elected officials to address #RoadViolence. We have to do better. #VisionZeroHFX anyone or are we going to contine as #ZeroVisionHFX? #CarBrain #SafeStreetsNS #ActiveMobilityMatters #VisionZero
"Those pesky cyclists, doing healthy things & raising money to prevent cancer. Get them off the roads!" Some #CarBrain idiot somewhere #BikeHFX #SafeStreetsNS
Johanna Dean & Meinhard Doelle, alongside many others, had their lives cut short through a lack of safe, protected infrastructure. They were both brilliant people. You can read about them here (www.dignitymemorial.com/en-ca/obitua...) & here (www.dal.ca/faculty/law/...) #RoadViolence #SafeStreetsNS
We need to print off some of these to stick under windscreens & on utility polls at main intersections! #SafeStreetsNS bsky.app/profile/howd...
I witnessed the aftermath of 2 auto crashes this week. There was significant damage to the cars in both & in one, damage to the hazard warning sign marking a pedestrian crosswalk. That's at least $28k, if no injuries (2018 CRISP study: drivetolive.ca/research/col...) #RoadViolence #SafeStreetsNS
The irony is not lost on me that we encourage children to ride bikes in cool places like this, but then make it incredibly hostile for them to access them on two wheels due to rampant #CarBrain & aggressive drivers #BikeHFX #ZeroVisionHFX #SafeStreetsNS
Watched a movie last night where someone walking was struck by a driver & died, my spouse quietly whispered to me "I dread this happening to you every time you ride your bike". Getting from A to B through a healthy & efficient mode of transport should not be something that kills us #SafeStreetsNS
Took me a while to finish up another letter to the Premier but here's a link to my last and latest ones. Includes links to evidence if anyone needs ideas or inspiration: docs.google.com/document/d/1... #SafeStreetsNS
Screenshot from a report on changing the narrative around road deaths. Text reads: If Londoners feel forced into car use and ownership, putting pressure on their finances, then it is understandable that measures to clean up the air or reduce danger and enable more people to walk, wheel and cycle safely, may be unpopular. Most people do not want to worsen pollution or run anyone over, they just want to get to their destination. The debate about transport both in politics and in the media is incredibly polarised and fractious. In this context, cleaner vehicle emission standards, enforcement of speed limits or new pedestrian crossings can get framed as an imposition on people who drive, rather than as helpful measures to improve our health and reduce the numbers of people killed and injured on our roads.
This, in particular, spoke to me wrt the current narrative being spouted by Nova Scotia's Premier & #HaliSky's Mayor. Just substitute Nova Scotians for Londoners in the text! #SafeStreetsNS
“The Motor Vehicle Act allows for multiple modes of transportation and we all have to share that space safely. If you can’t do that, then you shouldn’t be driving.” 🎯 @shawncleary.bsky.social #SafeStreetsNS
